Am writing…

I asked Joseph O’Connor once at a reading why he wrote. He is self deprecating, as most writers worth their salt tend to be, and he had told us how in his early days as a writer he had submitted a manuscript to Faber and Faber only to be rejected from a dizzying height. In their rejection letter to him, they told him that not only were not publishing his manuscript but they were also advising him that he should never write again. To come back from such rejection takes guts or self loathing or foolhardiness or a hefty measure of all three, it’s why I asked him the question – why write, why do you do it? His reply was emphatic. He said, “there was nothing else I could do, I had no choice but to write.” And therein lies the truth. Writers write because they feel compelled to do so. It is not for fame or fortune, those are by products if you’re lucky – it’s because you have to. It is an itch that must be scratched. Why else would we sit for hours on end at a screen wearing stained cardigans and fingerless gloves only for love or love/hate? I am writing…the second book process has been difficult, I won’t lie but I’m getting there. The Manhattan Island Walking Tour will be out next year. Laters…
